The retention of qualified faculty is an important factor in maintaining the identity and professional climate of a medical school. In studying faculty mobility from the institutional point of view, data on faculty attrition is closely examined. A faculty coefficient for each medical school was determined by the ratio of the number of salaried faculty the school that year. Twenty-seven variables were selected to predict faculty attrition. These variables fall into four broad categories: size of institution, faculty variables, financial variables, and miscellaneous variables.
