Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) containing the fixative mercuric chloride is considered the “gold standard ” for the fixation of ova and parasites in the preparation of permanently stained smears of stool specimens. However, mercuric chloride is potentially hazardous to laboratory personnel and presents disposal problems.
