Background. Persistent systemic inflammation has been widely recognized in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and is associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Intervention therapies aiming for the block-ade of inflammatory cytokines are considered attractive approaches for CKD patients with signs of chronic inflammation. In this context, thalidomide, due to its potent anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory proper-ties, may represent an alternative strategy of treatment.
