Lipid peroxidation, an autocatalytic free radical process, is increased in a w ide variety of conditions including various hemolytic anemias and hem o globin disorders. Increased erythrocyte lipid peroxidation occurs in the presence of iron species and some hem e moieties. In this study, greatly reduced concentrations of m alondialdehyde (MDA), an indicator of lipid peroxidation, w ere observed in stored blood anticoagulated with citrate, phosphate, dextrose, and adenine (CPDA-1) upon the addition of deferox amine m esylate (DM), diethylenetriam inepentaacetic acid (DTPA), and ethylenediam inetetraacetic acid (EDTA) (P < 0.001).
