The author suggesfs that a welfare recipient's decision to look for work is influenced by more titan the characteristics of the individual recipient and of the welfare system—if is also affected by factors inherent in the structure of the labor market ifself. Conseguently, the author examines the relationship of a variefy of factors to the decision to search for employment, including aspects of the recipient's past employmenf experience, her occupational aspirations, personal charac-terisfics of the recipient. and her attitudes about mothers ' working outside the home. Implications of the findings for welfare policy and feature research are also discussed
