The purpose of this article is to explicate the meaning of unitary from a historical perspective. The term was first used in ancient Greece, and its meaning has been transformed over time. The article explicates the similarities and differences among the nurse theorists who use the term unitary. It also specifies a different approach to healthcare when a unitary perspective of the human guides practice. It is no secret that healthcare delivery is not adequate. Health professionals and recipients of care alike are unhappy with the unfolding healthcare delivery system. How can it be changed to serve society in a humane way, respectful of the person’s, family’s, and community’s views? Since beliefs about humans and health guide practice, an alternative view of the human as unitary has given rise to a different approach to care that has been shown to be satisfying to health professionals and recipients o
