Airway mucus is a complex mixture of liquids and proteins. Important components are gel-forming mucins, which are high-molecular-weight glycoproteins whose un-usual viscoelastic properties permit the gel to interact with epithelial cilia, thus promoting clearance of deposited foreign materials.
