PERITONEAL DIALYSIS INTERNATIONAL: ITS PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE

The story of Peritoneal Dialysis International (PDI)starts with the introduction of the Toronto Western Hospital technique for continuous ambulatory perito-neal dialysis (CAPD) using plastic bags, which was first presented at the April meeting of the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs in 1978 (1). This presenta-tion made the Toronto Western Hospital technique for CAPD widely known and brought hundreds of nephrolo-gists, nurses, and other individuals to our unit to learn about this new technique. We kept a visitors book where each visitor wrote his name, address, and impressions of his visit to our Unit and of the technique (Figure 1). As our Unit advanced in its knowledge of all areas of CAPD, such as connectors, treatment of peritonitis, new solutions, management of various complications of CAPD, etc., we thought it important to keep our visitor
