KERATINOPHIL IC FUNGI ON CATS AND DOGS

submitted for veterinary attention to a receiving home in Glasgow ere examined for the presence ofkeratinophitic fungi. None of the animals showed clinical evidence of ri gworm infection. Trichophyton terrestre was isolated in 3 instances, once from a cat and twice from dogs. 7". rubrum and T. mentagrophytes w re also isolated from a dog.Approximately 500 isolations of non-keratinophilic fungi were made. Several workers have shown that animals may carry keratinophilic fungi on their coats. McKeever, Menges, Kaplan & Ajello (1958) isolated Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Microsporum gypseum and M. cookei from wild rodents. Ot~emi~ek & Dvo~ik (1962) isolated T. terrestre from small mammals in south eastern Moravia. Marples & Smith (1962) isolated from hedgehogs, the soil type and a pigmented strain of 7-. terrestre. Friedman, Derbes, Hodges & Sinski (1960) cultured dermatophytes from the scalps of 66 children showing none of the usual signs of infection. As far as it is known there have been no published investigations of domesti-cated animals such as cats and dogs for the presence of keratinophilic fungi.
