In any fast-moving field such as music cognition, researchers may sometimes be afflicted by a sort of short cultural memory. Older scholarship is frequently forgot-ten or neglected in favor of what is new. An instructive example of this is the frequent citation of Russell (1980) as the original impetus behind the circumplex model of emotion, whereas Hevner (1936) proposed a model of emotion that is remarkably similar almost half a century earlier. Cases like this dot the landscape of our scholar-ship, and reflect a certain level of detachment from our intellectual forebears.
