The faecal microflora of infants up to 10 wk old was studied. Coliforms and streptococci colonised the gut early. Lactobacilli occurred only in a proportion of the babies but staphylococci were consistently present in large numbers. KEY WORDS-Staphylococci; Breast-fed baby; Gut microflora
