Enzyme catalyzed fuel cells offer potentially an inexpensive alternative to classical fuel cells, which rely on transition metals as catalysts. Due to the usage of biocatalysts, biofuel cells can be operated under mild conditions, i.e. near, or at room temperature and neutral pH. In addition the size of biofuel cells can be even 100 times smaller than a conventional battery or fuel cell, which enables the usage of biofuel cells in e.g. medical applications.
