Vascular changes such as endothelial dysfunction or increased carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) are recognized as early phenomena during atherogen-esis (1,2). They are associated with a poor prognosis for adverse cardiovascular events in patients with hypertension or coronary artery disease (CAD) (3,4). Lipid-lowering therapy with statins (usually high-dose) exerts important beneficial effects in the primary and secondary prevention of coronary events, in endothelial function, and in the reduction of carotid artery IMT in patients with CAD or hypercholes-terolemia (5–8).
