To study the effectiveness of intrauterine lidocaine comparing with placebo in conjunction with paracervical block for pain relief during fractional curettage. METHODS This is a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial. Two hundred and thirty patients were allocated to two groups, receiving either a 5-mL 2%lidocaine (n=115) or saline (n=115) intrauterine infusion and standard paracervical block before fractional curettage. Subjective pain experience was measured by100-mm visual analogue scale. RESULTS There were not statistically difference between both groups in mean age, BMI, parity, history of curettage, menopausal status. Pain scores were found to be less in the study group study group (45 (IQR 3-61) points), comparing with the control group (53 (IQR 35-82) points) with P<0.05. There were no serious adverse effects in this study. CONCLUSION The addition of intrauterine lidocaine to paracervical block have statistically significant difference for pain reduction during fractional curettage without serious adverse effects
