This is one of a series of ore deposit models, written by sci-entists of the U.S. Geological Survey, which at present include contributions on Mississippi Valley-type lead-zinc deposits (Leach et al., 2010) and porphyry copper deposits (John et al., 2010). The stated purposes of this VMS model are as fol-lows: (1) for national assessment of the mineral potential for these deposits in the United States, and (2) to assist explora-tion geologists, students, and teachers of economic geology, and researchers interested in understanding the origin of this important deposit type in the context of earth history and plate tectonics.
