Background: Asystasia gangetica (Linn.) T. Anderson (Acanthaceae) is commonly found in tropical Africa and Asia. It is used in traditional medicine for the management of several conditions including convulsion, asthma and pain. Objective: This study is aimed at investigating the anticonvulsant, sedative and anxiolytic activities of the aqueous leaf and stem extract of Asystasia gangetica. Materials and Methods: Strychnine- and picrotoxin-induced convulsions were used to investigate its anticonvulsant activity; hexobarbitone-induced sleep and hole board models for its sedative activity, and the elevated plus and Y maze models for its anxiolytic activity. Results: The extract (400 mg/kg) significantly (p <0.05) delayed the onset of convulsion induced by strychnine (4 mg/kg) and picrotoxin (4 mg/kg) while reducing mortality by 80%. In the hexobarbitone-induced sleep test, at 100-400 mg/kg, the extract significantly (p <0.05) and dose-dependently reduced sleep onset time and increased sleep duration. It also significantly (p <0.05) and dose-dependently reduced the number of head dips by mice in the hole board model; and significantly increased time spent in the open arms of the elevated plus maze (EPM) and elevated Y maze (EYM). Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids and cardiac glycosides. Conclusion: The findings in this study show that the aqueous leaf and stem extract of A. gangetica possess anticonvulsant, sedative and anxiolytic activities
