Abstract: Henrik Ibsen’s path-breaking play A Doll’s House (1879) has been adapted in many occasions. The fi lmic version made by David Thacker in 1992 has been one of the most recent and relevant adaptations. The main purpose of this article is in the fi rst place, to show how this fi lm refl ects Victorian society as regards women’s situation and family life from a historical perspective. Secondly, I will defi ne and apply the concepts of the private and public spheres to the text from the perspective of materialist feminism.
