Douglas et al. (2009) recently proposed standards of practice for culturally competent care for nurses ’ use in practice, research, education, and administration. This article is in response to the authors ’ invited dialogue and addresses key elements that distinguish the standards: (a) social justice as the foundation of the standards and (b) the relationship between social justice and culturally competent care (CCC). The cul-tural context that surrounds the daily lives of a distinct cultural group (migrant and seasonal farmworkers [MSFWs]) is an exemplar that illustrates how social justice encourages the delivery of CCC.
