Part of our challenge as music educators is to create lifelong musicians. Most of us experienced the personal gratification of producing quality music as a soloist as well as in an ensemble. This is part of what encouraged us to be music educators (Madsen & Kelly, 2002). There was a self-aware-ness that grew out of our experiences. It was this awareness that we could make satisfying music independently and share it with others that became a driving force for a career that led us to share those experiences with young people (Myers, 2005).
