Meeting the needs of students who are gifted and have learning disabilities

Children who are gifted and also have learning disabilites are doubly at risk. If we don’t inter-vene, these students frequently fail in school. If we intervene by addressing only their weak-nesses, they often resent us, our efforts, and the school’s response. However, by rethink-ing the classroom environment and providing enrichment, structure, and remediation, and through collaboration among professionals with varied expertise, we can effectively and success-fully meet these students ’ needs. ome students present a confusing array of learn-~ ing characteristics. They may have poor organiza-tional skills, be inattentive in class, be unable to master basic spelling or reading skills, have poo
