This paper discusses the reliability of operation of an on-line computer system with a spare processor., described by a semi-Markov process model. Analytical solutions are obtained by using computer-aided algebraic manipula-tion techniques. The main purpose of the paper is to demonstrate that the difficulties of obtaining analytic solutions to Markov processes by standard techniques can be considerably reduced by the application of algebraic sym-bol manipulation languages. To the author's knowledge, the results of the reliability analysis are also new.
