Euler’s problem, that of buckling of a uniform column under its own weight, is generalized to include columns of variable sti¬ness. It is posed as an inverse prob-lem: namely, determine the variation of the sti¬ness along the axis of the column so that the column has the prescribed buckling mode, given as a simple polynomial function
