Older road user safety is becoming more important as the population ages. All Australian governments have policies and programs either directly or indirectly concerned with older road users. These programs and policies reflect a mix of two divergent approaches: to set standards of performance which older road users need to meet to safely use the road environment, or to change the road environment so it is less demanding of older road user performance. This paper explores these approaches in relation to older drivers and older pedestrians, and identifies areas for further policy and program development
