Nonadrenergic imidazoline receptors (I receptors) mediate the central antihypertensive effects of clonidine. Agmatine, an ar-ginine metabolite that is synthesized within bovine brain and exhibits clonidine-displacing substance (CDS) activity, might be the endogenous I receptor neurotransmitter.
