Agitation is commonly seen in people with dementia. In Taiwan, the prevalence of agitation in those with dementia is approximately 45% (Chow et al., 2002). Agitation has a negative impact on the physical and psychosocial functions of those with dementia and also increases the burden on caregivers and health care resources. Agitation has traditionally been managed with chemical or physical restraints, but these treatments may cause negative effects. Alternative approaches, such as use of preferred music, would be valuable in managing agitation.
