aggregate census data at low levels of geography to assess change in urban America between the 1960 and 1970 censuses. I am grateful for these conversations. They were my introduction to the power of the census to reveal change in social patterns over time; being return migrants ourselves, many of them centered on the urban impact of increased levels of internal population movement that followed World War II, especially among men who had served in that war. Later, in classes with Steve Ruggles, I learned how the availability of census microdata—information about individuals and their households—greatly increased the analytical potential for measurement of change in individual behavior over time.
