Bacjground: Because the human immunodeficiency virus (IUV) is extremely heterogeneous in its impact on various subpopu1ations, it is important to carry out HIV seroprevalence studies in dift'erent subpopulatioos using standardized techniques. The present studr is the first to report seroprevalencc rates of HIV in family medicine outpatient populations. Methods: To estimate the prevalence and demographic dis1ribution of mv, 3874 sera samples were collected anonymously at six family medicine clinics in San Bernardino County during a I-year period.
