two main lines of endeavor since its in-ception in 1941. First, to develop basic re-search information in the science of nu-tnition, primarily through the support and encouragement of nutrition scientists work-ing in academic institutions on projects to advance nutrition knowledge. Second, it had endeavored to publicize and interpret nutrition research findings, both for the assistance of professionals working in the field and for the education of the public. These fundamental policies have not changed. There have been recent modifi-cations, however, in the manner in which they have been carried out. The Federal Government’s allocation of large funds for basic scientific research in the last few years might seem to make private support unnecessary. Yet there are important areas of need not reached by the relatively inflexible government support program to which Nutrition Foundation support can, and is, being applied effec-tively. The freedom of action provided the re-searcher by a Nutrition Foundation grant is often of vital assistance to his program. The Foundation encourages and supports a qualified young investigator early in his careen, when he is developing a profes-sional program, and at a time when he has not become sufficiently well established to compete successfully for grants from governmental agencies.
