BRIEF COMMUNICATIONS Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma Involving the Digit in a Cat

In the veterinary and medical literature, a heterogeneous group of sarcomas have been described variously as giant cell tumor of soft parts, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, derma-tofibrosarcoma protuberans, and malignant fibrous xan-thoma. On the basis of ultrastructural studies it appears that this group of sarcomas may have a common histogenesis.“.8 We describe the histology and ultrastructure of a pleomorphic sarcoma in a cat which was identical morphologically to malignant fibrous histiocytoma in man and rats. These find-ings support previous descriptions of a dual histiocytic-fibro-blastic nature of this tumor in ~a t s.2.~ A two-year-old neutered male domestic short hair cat was seen because of swelling of recent onset of the second digit of the hind limb.
