The Effects of a First Grader's Participation in a Writer's Workshop On Their

Researchers believe that writing, and the writing process, are integral parts of any grade level curriculum. Since Writer's Workshop is an essential part of this process, an examination of the effects of first graders ' participation in Writer's Workshop was studied to determine whether or not this enabled them to become more confident writers, and also whether or not this enabled them to become more proficient in using descriptive words in their writing. It was hypothesized that first grade students do not become more confident writers, nor do they become more proficient in using descriptive words in their writing by participating in Writer's Workshop. This study compared the effects of Writer's Workshop on 24 first grade students in the East Brunswick Public School District. The class consisted of 12 girls and 12 boys. The children participated in Writer's Workshop on a weekly basis and they were administered pretests and posttests to measure any changes in their attitudes towards writing.
