is one of the major big game species in our country. This is because it is endemic to Spain and is only found in this country in mountainous regions characteristic of Spanish geography. As well as its attraction as a game species, where it corresponds to the species with the highest economic value, it is also of great ecolo-gical value reflecting the special zoological biodiver-sity characteristic of Spain. Of the four original subspecies defined by Cabrera in 1911 (Capra pyre-naica hispanica, C. p. victoriae, C. p. lusitanica, C. p. pyrenaica), only two currently exist.
