This course surveys British literature of the long eighteenth century. Beginning with Charles ll's restoration to the English throne in 1660 and ending with another pivotal moment in British political history, the democratizing Reform Act of 1832, the long eighteenth century encompasses several major literary and intellectual currents, including libertinism, Enlightenment, sensibility, and Gothicism. We will read across genres and artistic mediums, considering novels, poems, plays, diaries, essays, periodicals, paintings, and engravings, among other cultural forms.
