Evidence pre-sented by Brandner and Mueller (this volume) strongly suggests that T antigen is a primary viral gene product rather than an induced cellular anti-gen. The regulation of the integrated SV40 genome in transformed cells can therefore be investigated by studying the regulation of T antigen in trans-formed cells. Correlations can lso be made between the regulation of T antigen and the regulation of the transformed phenotype.
