Because of the independent origins of evolutionary ecol-ogy and many areas of applied biology, they initially evolved in isolation from each other, with each develop-ing its own terminology, research approaches, societies, and publications. Such fields as economic entomology, plant pathology, parasitology, microbiology, and even medicine have a wealth of information that could aid in theory development in evolutionary ecology; but for a long time this has largely been ignored by evolutionary ecologists.
