Adherence to treatment medications for chronic illness is often poor. In patients with asthma, poor adherence with medications has been associated with greater dis-ease symptoms1 and an increased risk of hospitalization2 and death.3 Remembering to take their medications is a particular problem for many patients with asthma.4-7 Automated audio or visual reminders have the poten-tial to serve as an innovative way to improve treatment adherence in adolescents with asthma.8 Mobile phones have become integrated into the everyday lives of American teenagers and, for many, texting is the preferred mode of communication.9 According to a recently released report by the Pew Research Center, based on surveys con-ducted in the summer of 2009, the typical American teen-ager sends 50 texts a day.9 In total, 31 % of respondent
