Obesity in US children is a growing health concern; 17.1 % of children aged 2 to 19 years in the United States are currently overweight or obese.1 Insulin resis-tance, usually associated with obesity, is implicated in the pathogenesis of glucose intolerance and type 2 dia-betes mellitus (T2DM).2 The maintenance of the inverse relationship between insulin sensitivity (ability of insu-lin to promote peripheral glucose disposal) and insulin secretion is critical for normal glucose homeostasis.
