Genital herpes infection is the primary cause of genital ulcer disease (GUD) worldwide [1]. The recurrent type is mainly caused by herpes virus simplex type 2 (HSV-2) but can also be caused by HSV-1 which has been estimated to cause about 50 % of cases of primary ano-genital herpes in young adults [2]. European cross-sectional surveys conducted between 1989 and 2000 found that age-standardised HSV-2 seroprevalence ranged from 4 % in England and Wales to 24 % in Bulgaria [3] compared with developing countries, substantially higher rates of HSV-2 have been observed in sub-Saharan Africa ranging from 30 % to 80 % in women and 10 % to 50 % in men [4,5]. Few countries have population-based national estimates of HSV-2 that allow the estimation of seroprevalence trends [6].
