de France (Paris). The Hermeneutics of the Subject is the transcript of the course given in 1982. Its publication is part of a larger series that will eventually include all 13 courses. Two courses in the series precede its publication: Society Must be Defended (1976) and Abnormal (1975). The fourth in the series, Psychiatric Power (1974), has just been published. The lectures that constitute The Hermeneutics of the Subject were delivered when Foucault was writing volumes two and three of the History of Sexuality. Like these books, The Hermeneutics of the Subject is about the notion of the ‘care of the self ’ (epimeleia heautou) or, more broadly formulated, about ‘the problem of “the subject and truth” ’ (p. 2). The material that Foucault discusses here was meant to be published as a book in its own right entitled Care of the Self [the title was eventually given to volume three of the History of Sexuality series; see Elden (2005) on the complex history of the History of Sexuality project].
