"Emotional intelligence (EI) is a relatively new psychological construct and is the focus of much debate. This debate is centered on the differences in the way EI is conceptualised and measured between the ability and the mixed model schools of thought. The ability model considers EI to be a form of intelligence similar to cognitive skill and can thus, be observed in an objective manner. In contrast, the mixed model considers EI to be a mix of cognitive and personality traits. Mixed model EI is typically assessed using self-report measures.
