1Men in Nursing Origin, Career Path, and Benefits to Nursing as a Profession

Three events that happened recently made me think ofmen in nursing and the related effects of this growing phenomenon. First, I was interviewed recently by a reporter of a local newspaper in Las Vegas about a story on men in nursing. Second, I was asked to talk about men in American nursing with a group of male nursing students at Kyunpook National University during my recent trip to Korea. Third, I noted an increasing number of male students in the freshmen class of Bengbu Medical College Department of Nursing in China during my recent trip to the school. In this column, I will trace the role of men in the evolution of modern nursing, reflect on the career paths of male nurses, and elaborate on the implications of an increasing number of men in the profession.
