This report describes the development and implementation of an intervention for improving students ' interest and academic achievement in social studies. The targeted population consisted of first and fourth grade students of different socioeconomic levels in northwestern Illinois. Problems were documented in student surveys, teacher observations, and assessments. An analysis of probable cause data revealed that students had negative attitudes and low test scores for social studies. Researchers reported that students considered social studies irrelevant and boring.
