Background: The prevalence of obesity is increasing in children. Validation of methods of predicting fatness in African American and white children could help to identify children at high risk. Objective: We assessed published methods for determining body fat in 12-y-old male and female white and African American schoolchildren. Design: The body fat of 114 children was measured with the use of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, underwater weighing (den-sitometry), measurement of skinfold thicknesses, isotope dilution (H218O), and bioelectrical impedance analysis.
