An analysis is made of the two-dimensional problem of Love wave propagation in layered media in which the rigidity and density vary in both horizontal (x) and vertical (z) directions. The ratio p / p is assumed to be independent of x but may be a function of z. Moreover, the horizontal variation in,u and p is taken to be the same in all the layers. The Thomson-Haskell matrix method is used to derive the dispersion equation for a multilayered model. The dispersion equation for some particular cases is obtained explicitly and the conditions for the existence of its roots are investigated. 1
