This paper discusses the competencies that are required to work effectively with information. It examines the nature of the information resources and how students interact with them. The discussion moves to the types of questions studcnts have asked and suggests that the predominant types may not be assisting students in developing information usage skills, thus not improving their mastery of a skill set such as that proposed by R. J. Marzano and R. W. Ewy (1989). Reviews of research have indicated that teachers often do not ask questions that require studehts to work with information resources, relying instead on qlyestions that merely ask for the recall of knowledge.
