Most Americans are aware of the high rates of social problems among Black Americans. For example, Blacks are dis-proportionately represented among Americans experiencing aca-demic failure, teenage pregnancy, female-headed families, chronic unemployment, poverty, alcoholism, drug addiction, and criminal victimization (Poussaint, 1983; U.S. News and World Report, 1986). Consequently, there is a great deal of debate among politi-cians, journalists, academics, and ordinary citizens concerning the etiology of these problems.
