supposed criminality and atavism of psychiatrists (a judgement suggested, e.g., by Michael Burleigh), or the postulated tactical reaction of leading representatives of German psychiatry (like Ernst RJdin, or Paul Nitsche) in view of the dangers to the profession (an interpretation put forward, e.g., by Dirk Blasius). In spite of these minor qualifications, the book under review is a major achievement for the historiography of German psychiatry. It contains a wealth of new empirical material, and adds considerably to our knowledge about key issues in the history of pre-1933, and in particular Nazi psychiatry
