Metabolizable Energy Values of Wheat and Some By-Product Feedstuffs for Growing Chicks1

ALTHOUGH metabolizable energy val-- ues have been published for many feed ingredients, values for many products used in feeds are unavailable and the pub-lished values for others vary considerably. The purpose of this paper is to present me-tabolizable energy values of some of the principal wheats grown in the Pacific Northwest and of some by-product feeds available in this area. PROCEDURE Determinations of metabolizable energy of the wheat varieties and samples of wheat mixed feed, barley bran, barley flour and Alaska peas were made by the method of Hill and Anderson (1958), with the excep-tion that chromium oxide was determined by the method of Czarnocki et al. (1961). Metabolizable energy values were corrected for nitrogen retention by the equation of Hill et al. (1960). Each value reported is an average for three groups of chicks (New Hampshire X Delaware). The samples of wheat were analyzed for pentosan content by A.A.C.C. Meth-od 52-10 (A.A.C.C, 1962) and by a modification of this method (Sollars, 1966). In the modified method the proce-dure is the same as A.A.C.C.
