Sordaria is restricted to coprophilous, soil-, or seed-borne Pyrenomycetes with aseptate, elongate ascospores with a gelatinous, amorphous sheath. The genus is redescribed and a key to fourteen accepted species is given. A checklist of all taxa described as Sordaria is added. In this paper a new description of Sordaria sensu stricto is given, followed by a key to fourteen accepted species and a list of all species that have been referred to Sordaria
