Background. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is recog-nized as a major public health problem in Australia with significant mortality, morbidity and economic burden. However, there is no comprehensive surveillance pro-gramme to collect, collate and analyse data on CKD in a systematic way. Methods. We describe an initiative called CKD Queens-land (CKD.QLD), which was established in 2009 to address this deficiency, and outline the processes and pro-gress made to date.
