Children's Attitudes CHILDREN'S ATTITUDES TOWARD RACE AND GENDER

An implicit assumption in the majority of literature looking at development of prejudice in children is that race prejudice and sex prejudice are equivalent across groups; that is, sex bias is not conditional on race, and likewise race bias is not conditional on sex bias of the child. However, Warner, Fishbein, Ritchey and Case (2001) found strong three-way race-sex/rater-target interactions when comparing children's same race-same sex group perceptions with their perceptions of the other three race-sex groups, as measured by their instrument, the Scale of Children's Attitudes toward Race and Gender-I (SCATRG-I). The goals for the current study were as follows: to develop from the SCATRG-I a more psychometrically sound instrument; to compare race-sex groups same race-same sex group perceptions with their perceptions of out-groups; and to assess the validity of the SCATRG-II.
